Biography of Judy Hyland
Judy Hyland, author of In the Shadow of the Rising Sun,
studied at St.Olaf, Northfield; Luther Bible Institute,
Minneapolis; and UCLA, Berkeley. After teaching high school English and speech
for five years, she set out for China in 1940 to work as a missionary teacher
under the American Lutheran Church. Because of the worsening war situation,
she was directed to the Philippine Islands, where she was to study Chinese
language until it would be feasible to enter China.
When the Japanese invaded the Philippines in December 1941, she was interned,
and lived in various prison camps until liberated by the American military on
February 4, 1945.
After her repatriation to the U.S.A .in May ,1945, she was married to Philip
Hyland, her fiance of nearly five years. Together they served parishes in
South Dakota and in 1950, they were assigned to assume missionary work in
Japan.
For thirty years, from 1950-1980, they served in Japan, doing evangelistic
work, teaching at a Bible School in Shizuoka, and for twelve years, doing a
student ministry near Tokyo University.
After retiring from their work in Japan in 1980, they worked in a north
Minneapolis church for ten years.
Judy Hyland had a busy life of speaking and conducting Bible seminars and
retreats. She was the author of a book, In the Shadow of the Rising Sun,
published by Augsburg Publishing Company in 1984. Judy Hyland passed away
in 2003, leaving behind four daughters and eight grandchildren.
