TrueCrypt Installation

Step 1: Download TrueCrypt

http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.php

The current version as of this document’s last update is 3.1a.

Step 2: Install TrueCrypt

Extract the ZIP File

Double-click on “TrueCrypt Setup.exe”

Step 3: Configure TrueCryt

Double-click to launch TrueCrypt, then click “Create Volume”

Step 4: Create a Standard Volume

Make sure “Create a standard TrueCrypt volume” is checked, then click “Next”

Step 5: Specify Volume Location

This can be on a USB Flash Disk or on your hard drive.

Step 6: Select an Encryption Option

Blowfish is secure and has the best performance of the available encryption mechanisms.

If you desire extra security, use one of the cascaded encryption options (combinations of two or three encryption types).

Step 7: Select a Volume Size

Make sure not to use the maximum available space.

On a USB Flash Disk, leave a few megabytes (on a 256MB Flash Disk, leave 56MB free.)

On a hard drive, make sure you leave plenty of free space; you probably don’t want your Volume size to be any larger than 2GB.

Step 8: Assign a Password to the Volume

The password should be several characters long and should be something you will never, ever forget.

If you do forget the password, the data encrypted by it is not recoverable.

Step 9: Select a Volume Format

I’d recommend using NTFS.

Click “Format” to prepare the new volume.

Step 10: Exit Volume Creation

Once the format is complete, click “Exit” to return to the main screen.

Step 11: Mount the Encrypted Volume

Highlight the drive letter you wish to use (in this case, “V:” and click “Mount”.

Make sure the Volume box contains the path to your volume (either type the full path name or click “Select File” to locate the encrypted volume).

Step 12: Prepare Traveller Disk Setup

If using a USB Flash Disk or other mobile device, you will want to install the TrueCrypt software on it so you can mount and use it on another computer.

Click “Tools” then “Traveller Disk Setup”.

Step 12: Traveller Disk Setup Continued

Select the root level of your mobile device.

Make sure “Include TrueCrypt Volume Creation Wizard” is checked.

Make sure “AutoRun Configuration” has “Auto-mount TrueCrypt volume” checked.

Make sure that the “Volume to Mount” is correct (click “Browse” to select the encrypted volume).

Make sure that the “Mount as drive letter” is selected (you can use any unused drive letter).

Click “Create”

Using TrueCrypt with a Mobile Device

When you insert a mobile device, auto-run should launch a window something like the one shown. Click “OK” to mount the volume.

If, for some reason, this doesn’t work (e.g., if Auto-Run is disabled), then browse to your mobile device, double click on the “TrueCrypt” folder, and double click on “TrueCrypt.exe”. Then mount the encrypted volume by hand.

Using Encrypted Volume for My Documents

Make sure your encrypted volume is large enough to hold everything in your current “My Documents” (and much more).

Right-click on “My Documents”, select “Properties”, and click “Move”.

Browser to the drive on which your encrypted volume is mounted and click “Okay”

Dismounting Volumes

When you are done using the encrypted volume or want to leave the computer, go to “My Computer”, then right-click on the mobile device, and select “TrueCrypt Dismount All”.

Alternatively, launch the TrueCrypt program and click “Dismount All”.

Removing Your Mobile Device

As always, before removing your mobile device.

Double click on the “Safely Remove Mass Storage Device” icon in the lower-right corner of your Windows screen.

Removing Your Mobile Device (continued)

Select your mobile device and click “Stop”

Removing Your Mobile Device (continued)

Confirm removal of your mobile device.
